LG And HERE Join Hands To Develop A Next Generation Telematics Product For Autonomous Cars
Tech giant LG has paired up with mapping company HERE on a next-gen communications hub for nearly or completely autonomous cars. The two are now working together to develop a telematics product aimed at self-driving vehicle applications.
The joint solution will put LG’s telematics tech together with HERE’s location services and high-resolution maps to offer something automakers can use as a communications hub for both semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicle platforms.
LG’s offering will incorporate communications tech including GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile networks including the forthcoming 5G standard to help communicate data transmitted by other autonomous vehicles on the road and information systems to in-car navigation and technology centers. The new alliance makes it clearer that LG wants a major stake in the autonomous driving world. The company may not build the cars themselves, but it wants to form the backbone that these cars need to talk to each other.
