Tim Cook suggests Apple is building autonomous systems for more than cars

Well Apple decided to finally let the cat out of the bag with its latest announcement that, its not just building autonomous driving systems for cars but also for something that serves an even greater purpose. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was wise enough not to give much away but hinted on the company’s intentions and plans with the autonomous systems.
Cook in his interview stated, “[Autonomous] systems can be used in a variety of ways. A vehicle is only one, but there are many different areas of it. And I don’t want to go any further with that.”

Being the tech giants that they already are, expect nothing less from Apple when it comes to innovation. The statements made by Tim Cook has cooked up a lot of speculations and has created a one of a kind buzz in the market with a lot of notions around the autonomous systems. The influence of autonomous systems in drones, shipping, and all kinds of robots, from warehouse assistants, to search robots, down to the machine that disassembles iPhones have all been thought upon. But what could it really be? No one has a clue!

Apple is certainly not the only company working on these things: there are already several autonomous drones, big ambitions for autonomous factory robots, and even plans for an autonomous delivery robot.

But expanding Apple’s focus beyond cars opens up a lot more possibilities for the company, since its AI could reach far more markets. Given how many companies are investing in autonomous technologies right now, that certainly seems like the right idea — even if cars still seem to be Apple’s main target.

“We are very focused on autonomous systems,” Cook said. “We do have a large project going, and are making a big investment in this. From our point of view, autonomy is sort of the mother of all AI projects.”
