Tesla Pairs Up With AMD To Refine Its AI Chip For Autonomous Cars

Tesla is working its way up with Chip Processing Unit – AMD to refine its its new chip, which will likely reduce its reliance on Nvidia. Tesla also has around 50 employees working on this project, including chip star Jim Keller. Tesla’s decision to make to its own chip is a result of its push towards more in-house production and lesser reliance on other companies. Although, the chip will be built on top of AMD’s intellectual property.

Neither Tesla nor AMD responded to requests for comment, but reports were seemingly bolstered by comments made by Sanjay Jha, CEO of AMD spinoff GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor foundry, during a conference that it is working directly with Tesla on producing a chip.

Furthermore, Tesla has already received back samples of the first implementation of its processor and is now running tests on it, according to latest sources. The news that Tesla is laboring on its own autonomous driving chip follows the revelation that the company is also developing a new hardware suite with more computing power to help achieve its goal of full automation.
